Wennberg placed on waivers by Blue Jackets for purpose of buyout


Alexander Wennberg was placed on waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday for the purpose of buying out the final three seasons of his contract.

The 26-year-old forward will be free to sign with any team when free agency starts Friday, Oct. 9. He signed a six-year contract Sept. 1, 2017.

Wennverg scored 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 57 regular-season games and five points (three goals, two assists) in 10 postseason games this season. His production has declined each season since he scored an NHL career-high 59 points (13 goals, 46 assists) in 2016-17.

Selected by the Blue Jackets in the first round (No. 14) of the 2013 NHL Draft, Wennberg has scored 201 points (40 goals, 161 assists) in 415 regular-season games and eight points (four goals, four assists) in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
