Jonathan Drouin had two assists for the Montreal Canadiens in a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Bell Centre in Montreal on Monday in his return after taking a leave of absence for anxiety last season.

Christian Dvorak had a goal and three assists in his Canadiens debut after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Sept. 4. Josh Anderson scored two goals and had an assist, and Michael Pezzetta scored two goals.

Drouin had not played since April 21, missing Montreal’s final 12 regular-season games and its run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Anderson gave the Canadiens a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:24 of the first period. Dvorak scored on the power play to make it 2-0 at 13:06.

Pezzetta made it 3-0 at 9:46 of the second period.

David Kampf scored shorthanded at 11:15 to make it 3-1, but Anderson scored 1:25 later on the same power play to give Montreal a 4-1 lead at 12:40.

Ondrej Kase cut it to 4-2 with 1:03 left in the second.

Pezzetta scored with 1:49 remaining for the 5-2 final.

Jake Allen made 15 saves on 15 shots in 29:46 for the Canadiens, and Kevin Poulin allowed two goals on 22 shots. Jack Campbell allowed three goals on 12 shots in 29:46, and Petr Mrazek made seven saves on eight shots in his Maple Leafs debut after signing a three-year contract as a free agent July 28.

It was the first game with Toronto for Kampf and Kase.

Blue Jackets 3, Penguins 0: Yegor Chinakhov scored in his first NHL game, and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Monday.

It was the preseason opener for each team.

Chinakhov received a pass at the point before beating goalie Tristan Jarry at 16:28 of the first period to make it 1-0. Chinakov was selected by Columbus in the first round (No. 21) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Adam Boqvist made it 2-0 at 4:10 of the third period. The defenseman was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the trade for Seth Jones on July 23.

Emil Bemstrom scored into an empty net at 17:43 for the 3-0 final.

J-F Berube started for Columbus and made 20 saves before being replaced at 11:55 of the second period by Jet Greaves, who made eight saves.

Jarry made eight saves for Pittsburgh. He was replaced at 11:34 of the second by Filip Lindberg, who made 12 saves.
