Reinhart scores twice, Sabres hang on against Devils

NEWARK, N.J. — Sam Reinhart scored two goals, and the Buffalo Sabres spoiled the season debut of Nico Hischier in a 3-2 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Saturday.

Colin Miller scored, and Linus Ullmark made 25 saves for the Sabres (5-7-2), who ended a four-game losing streak, including three straight following a two-week pause due to NHL COVID-19 protocol. 

Hischier was named the 12th captain in Devils history prior to making his season debut. The 22-year-old center sustained a foot injury during the offseason and had been in protocol since Feb. 8 before being removed Saturday. He had one shot on goal in 16:29 of ice time.

Kyle Palmieri and P.K. Subban scored, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves for the Devils (6-4-2). It was their first loss in four games, including three since returning from 15 days off because of NHL COVID-19 protocol.

Miller gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead on a snap shot from the right point at 5:26 of the first period. It was the first even-strength goal for the Sabres in four games. 

Reinhart scored on a deflection from the slot to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead at 8:07 of the second period. Matt Irwin took the initial shot from the left point.

Reinhart scored his second of the game on the power play on a redirection from the slot at 17:46 of the second for a 3-0 lead.

Palmieri scored :40 into the third period on a snap shot from the left circle to pull the Devils within 3-1.

Subban scored a power-play goal to make it 3-2 off a slap shot from the top of the right circle at 16:44 of the third. The Devils pulled Blackwood for a 6-on-4 advantage.

Devils forward Travis Zajac, who spent 19 days in protocol before being removed Wednesday, played 15:22 in his first game since Jan. 28. It was his 999th NHL game.
