Zach Werenski will not play when the Blue Jackets host the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday (3 p.m. ET; NHLN, SN, FS-O, FS-CR, NHL.TV).
The defenseman appeared to sustain an injury in the third period of a 4-3 win against the Dallas Stars on Thursday and did not play the final 4:05 of the game.
“Zach is banged up,” Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said Saturday. “He’s out for tomorrow. Waiting for more information. He will not play tomorrow.”
Werenski, who is second on the Blue Jackets in ice time per game (24:09) behind defenseman Seth Jones (25:02), has four points (one goal, three assists) in 12 games this season. — Craig Merz
Loui Eriksson could make his season debut when the Canucks visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, CBC, SN, CITY, TVAS, NHL.TV).
The forward, who took line rushes with Bo Horvat and Tanner Pearson at morning skate, has been a healthy scratch for all 14 games this season.
The Canucks (6-8-0) have lost three straight games and are in fifth place in the Scotia North Division.
“Anyone who goes in for their first game, they might be a little bit rusty but that’s something we considered all along,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “We’ve shuffled some guys in and out and we might put some fresh guys in tonight.”
Eriksson scored 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in 49 games with the Canucks last season. — Dave McCarthy
