Matthews ends season with 41 goals, Maple Leafs fall to Jets


WINNIPEG — Auston Matthews finished the season with an NHL-high 41 goals after not scoring in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Friday.

Kyle Connor scored twice, and Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves for the Jets (30-23-3) who won for the third time in their past 12 games. They will face the Edmonton Oilers next in the Stanley Cup First Round beginning Wednesday.

Ilya Mikheyev had a goal and an assist, and Jack Campbell made 20 saves for the Maple Leafs (35-14-7), who had a nine-game point streak end (7-0-2). They will face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round beginning Thursday.

Pierre Engvall gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 7:15 of the first period.

Mason Appleton tied it 1-1 at 1:13 of the second period.

Mikheyev scored on a rebound to put Toronto ahead 2-1 at 5:25.

Connor scored on a 2-on-1 to tie it 2-2 at 13:52 of the second period before putting Winnipeg in front 3-2 with a one-timer at 4:21 of the third period.

Jansen Harkins scored his first goal of the season into an empty net for the 4-2 final with 52 seconds left.
