The Seattle Kraken are already cracking Top 5 lists.
Kraken was the fifth-most searched word of 2020 on the Merrian-Webster Dictionary website according to the company’s statistical analysis.
The “Word of the Year” for 2020, which is the most searched word on the site, to no surprise, was “pandemic.”
Kraken came in behind “Coronavirus,” “Defund,” and “Mamba,” (the nickname of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who died in a tragic helicopter crash back in January) on the list of most-searched words of the year.
The mascot for the NHL’s next expansion franchise, set to begin play during the 2021-22 NHL season, is defined by Merriam-Webster’s as “a mythical Scandinavian sea monster.”
When the team announced the nickname on July 23, searches for kraken increased 128,000 percent according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary site.
The rest of the most-searched word list according to the dictionary were “quarantine,” “antebellum,” “schadenfreude,” “asymptomatic,” “irregardless,” “icon,” and “malarkey.”
