The Carolina Hurricanes clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center in Dallas on Monday.

The Hurricanes (31-10-7) have qualified for the playoffs for three straight seasons after missing the postseason in the previous nine.

Jamie Benn scored his fourth point of the game when he drove to the net and scored off a pass from Jason Robertson at 2:44 of overtime.

Joe Pavelski, Jason Dickinson and Denis Gurianov scored for the Stars (21-15-12). Jake Oettinger made 29 saves.

Max McCormick, Jaccob Slavin and Jani Hakanpaa scored for the Hurricanes. James Reimer made 27 saves.

The teams play again here Tuesday.

Pavelski gathered a loose puck behind the goal line and flipped it into the net off Hakanpaa for his NHL-leading 12th power-play goal and a 1-0 lead at 1:19 of the first period.

Esa Lindell‘s knuckling shot from the left point deflected off Dickinson’s skate in the slot to make it 2-0 at 16:59.

McCormick scored his first goal of the season when he batted the puck in after Morgan Geekie fed him with a no-look backhand pass from behind the net, cutting it to 2-1 at 13:24 of the second period.

Slavin tied it 2-2 at 16:28. He took advantage of Andrew Cogliano playing without a stick to send a wrist shot over Oettinger’s blocker.

Gurianov’s one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Benn put the Stars ahead 3-2 at 17:04.

Hakanpaa tied it 3-3 when he took a pass from Geekie and scored on a shot that changed direction at 15:46 of the third period.
