Justin Abdelkader was placed on unconditional waivers by the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday for the purpose of a buyout.
The 33-year-old forward signed with the Red Wings on Nov. 12, 2015, getting a contract worth $4.25 million annually. He scored three points (three assists) in 49 games this season, his lowest total in 11 full NHL seasons.
Abdelkader will become an unrestricted free agent when the signing period begins Oct. 9.
Selected by Detroit in the second round (No. 42) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Abdelkader has scored 252 points (106 goals, 146 assists) in 739 regular-season games and 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in 64 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
